So, previously I wrote about The most wonderful thing in the world, being fresh peas. I have to say that my mind changed when we ended up with 10 fresh cantaloupe from our garden all ripe and ready to eat on the same day.
(Here are our 2 plants that ended up with about 25 cantaloupe overall - WAY too many!)
Now, I may have changed my mind again to peaches. Mmmm... Delicious. And arguably even better canned. Part of the reason I fell in love with our house was because of a mature peach tree in the backyard.
A few days ago I was lazily going through a box of peaches that I had picked up off the ground, peeling them and cooking them to make into fruit leather. I wasn't thinking of canning them yet, since the majority on my counters weren't ripe yet. But, suddenly I decided I'd better can the ones I had, and after a crazy, frantic, somewhat disastrous 5 hour canning/cooking session, I ended up with crying kids, sore feet, a terribly messy kitchen, and 8 pints of peach jam, 10 quarts of peaches, and 2 batches of fruit leather.
Today we had a much calmer canning session, since Jake and the girls helped, and we ended up with 28 more quarts of peaches. Almost half as many as last year, but I can't complain.
(I might still decide that peas are more delicious, since I have a few fall pea plants. Yum, yum.)

That's a lot of peaches! Yummy! You are so ambitious!
We had a terrible year in our garden. It didn't help that we had a really late spring and then I was gone for the hot parts of the summe. We ended up with just a few handfulls of peas, some carrots, and almost nothing else that ever matured, besides chokecherries. At least I didn't end up with sore feet!

What are you going to do with so many peaches? Mom helped Summer and I can like 24 quarts last year, and I think we still have like 12 left!
Last year we canned 52 quarts, and they were gone by March of this year, so there won't be any problem.
